Worm Slime 15

Worm Slime

Worm Slime 1Worm Slime is a fun science experiment for kids to do at home which shows how easily they can make their own worm like polymer! Kids will learn that there are many types of polymers around us and the properties depend on the chemicals they are made from. In the Gooey Slime experiment, kids make a rubbery polymer called Gooey Slime using two chemicals PVA and Borax. In this experiment, kids make a worm like long chained polymer using different chemicals: Sodium Alginate and Calcium Chloride. Sodium Alginate is a common food additive used as a thickener and gelling agent in ice cream, jellies, jams and pie fillings. Make your own worm polymer!

Hold the worms, try different colors and play with it!

Safety First! Adult Supervision Required. Don’t Eat/Drink your Experiments, Wear safety goggles where ever required

What to Do

  1. Pour 500 ml water using the 400 ml glass and 100 ml transparent bowl.
  2. Empty the Calcium Chloride test tube in the bowl and mix it. Keep it for 5 hours.
  3. Pour the solution into the 400 ml measuring glass.
  4. Take 200 ml of water in the bowl.
  5. Empty the Sodium Alginate test tube in. Mix it and keep it for 3 days.
  6. Add some color and mix it.
  7.  Fill the Sodium Alginate solution into the syringe.
  8. Empty it in the Calcium chloride solution.
  • Using forceps, you can pick up the worm slime and play with it

Working Principle of Worm Slime Experiment :

The worms form in the worm slime experiment when Sodium Alginate is squirted into the Calcium Chloride solution. Calcium Chloride solution acts as an activator or gelling solution. It changes the Sodium Alginate from liquid to gel-like leading to the formation of colorful worms. The slimy worms are basically Calcium Alginate that form from the combination of Sodium Alginate and Calcium Chloride.
