What to Do!

  1. Pull the plunger out of the syringe.
  2. Put small pieces of dry ice into the syringe.
  3. Cover the opening of the syringe with your finger.
  4. Add some water into the syringe using a dropper or pipette and quickly put the plunger back.
  5. Observe the gas coming out of the opening of the syringe.
  6. Hold the syringe in way that the plunger is away from you and cover the opening with finger.

Working Principle of Dry Ice Rocket :

In this experiment, we add water to dry ice. Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide, CO2. When dry ice is added to water, a ‘fog’ is created which is made up of carbon dioxide gas and water vapor. This can be seen flowing out from the opening of the syringe initially. Once the plunger is put, the opening of the syringe is covered to develop pressure. Due to this pressure, the gas pushes the plunger so as to escape.

Hence, a rocket is formed due to the pressure that is produced using the reaction of dry ice and water inside the syringe.
