Dry Ice Geyser Experiment

Dry Ice Geyser is an experiment where kids can make a model of a geyser using dry ice! Geyser is a spring that discharges water accompanied by steam. They are generally associated with volcanic area. In this experiment, we are going to make a miniature geyser by using dry ice and warm water.

Safety First! Adult Supervision Required. Don’t Eat/Drink your Experiments, Wear safety goggles where ever required

In the box

  • Plastic tumblers: 3
  • Warm water
  • Small dry ice pieces

Video on Youtube for the Experiment

What to Do!

  1. Place the tumblers on the table and make sure it has a small opening on the lid for the gas to come out.
  2. Put chunks of dry ice in each tumbler.
  3. Pour hot water in each tumbler.
  4. Now, place the lids back on the tumblers.

Working Principle of Dry Ice Geyser :

Dry ice turns directly into gas without going through the liquid phase, this process is called sublimation. When dry ice is dropped into water, ‘steam’ or ‘fog’ is produced. If there is a lid placed on top of the tumbler with a small/narrow opening, the gas escapes through the small opening making it look like a miniature geyser!

Geysers are geological features that eject steam up to a great height. In the experiment, the steam is carbon dioxide gas. The gas shoots up because of the narrow opening and that’s how you have your own geyser !
