Dry Ice Comet Experiment

Dry Ice Comet Experiment

Dry Ice Comet is an Astronomy experiment where kids can make a comet just exactly like the one you can find in space! Let’s make a comet of our own with some materials that you can find in your house.

Safety First! Adult Supervision Required. Don’t Eat/Drink your Experiments, Wear safety goggles where ever required

What to Do!

  1. Arrange the following ingredients in the plastic glasses: glucose, water, dry ice, water and sand.
  2. Layer your steel bowl with two garbage bags.
  3. Pour a glass full of water into the steel bowl.
  4. Put some sand in it and mix it well so that there are no lumps.
  5. Add glucose into the mixture and mix again.
  6. Pour a little amount of bleach in it and mix it again.
  7. Add a glass full of dry ice (fine powder) into the bowl and mix it well.
  8. Cover the mixture but make sure that carbon dioxide gas can escape a little.
  9. Once you feel the mixture hardening take the cover off.

Working Principle of Dry Ice Comet :

In this Astronomy experiment, we make a comet with all the elements present in a natural comet. A comet is also known as “dirty snowballs”. It is made up of ammonia, silica, carbon dioxide, protein and some water. So, for ammonia we have bleach, sand for silica, glucose for protein and dry ice for carbon dioxide.

When a comet passes close to the sun, it heats up and begins to outgas; it’s also called a tail. These phenomena are due to the effects of solar radiation and the solar wind upon the nucleus of the comet.

When we add dry ice to water, sand and glucose the dry ice starts to freeze the mixture instantly. When we cover the mixture, it transforms into a small ball like structure. Once taken out of the cover it begins to outgas just like a comet which forms the tail of a comet.

Now, you’ve made your own space object!
