Dry Ice Color Change Science Experiment for kids

Dry Ice Color Change

Dry-Ice-Color-Change-Science-Experiment-for-KidsDry Ice Color Change is an experiment where kids can learn about pH change and also know how dry ice can produce change in the pH value! We are going to use acid, base and an indicator to learn this concept. To make it more interesting, we’ll add dry ice to the solutions and see what happens.

Safety First! Adult Supervision Required. Don’t Eat/Drink your Experiments, Wear safety goggles where ever required

What to Do! – Instructions

  1. Pour the acid into the transparent glass.
  2. Pour the red cabbage juice into the acid and observe the color change from violet to blood red.
  3. Now, pour the basic solution into the glass and observe the change in color to dark green.
  4. Drop a chunk of dry ice into the solution and observe the color change again to yellow.

Working Principle of Dry Ice Color Change :

Red Cabbage being a universal indicator can show colors from blood red, purple, green and yellow depending upon the solution whether it is basic, acidic or neutral. When added to HCl (Hydrochloric Acid) it indicates the presence of acid by changing its color to blood red. Adding NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide) to it, starts the solution off as dark green to show that NaOH and HCl react to form a weakly basic solution. When dry ice is added to the solution, some of it forms carbonic acid, and lowers the pH. This changes the solution from weakly basic to acidic which is indicated by the color change from green to yellow.
